This research work lies in the investigation of epoxy resin blends prepared with various hardeners, such as imidazole (Imi), 2-methylimidazole (2-Imi), and dicyandiamide (Dicy), serving as latent curing (LC) agents. The study focused on the curing process of these blends at different ratios, examining the initiation of gelation, temperature duration, and time required to achieve the gel state. Following the preparation of blends, they were divided into three parts: refrigerated, at room temperature, and immediately subjected to complete curing at their respective cure temperatures. The epoxy-Imi and epoxy-2-Imi blends were cured at 140 °C, while epoxy-Dicy was cured at 180 °C. The cured samples were then analysed by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis for their thermal behaviour and stability properties. The flame retardant properties were evaluated from the limiting oxygen index, using the empirical formulae proposed by Van Krevelen et al. The research findings revealed that the cured samples exhibit good thermal stability and high glass transition temperatures, indicating the promising potential for making CFRP prepreg applications requiring enhanced shelf life with latency of the hardeners and thermal resistance which was achieved using less quantities of hardeners. Additionally, samples kept at room temperature and refrigeration conditions maintained their liquid state and free-flowing condition for up to 75 days, suggesting prolonged stability under these storage conditions.

摘要
