Modulational Instability of One-Component Bose-Einstein Condensate

Various types of Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing the dynamical behavior of matter wavefunctions in Bose-Einstein condensatesBose-Einstein condensate in external potentials are considered. The phenomenon of the modulationalExternal potential instabilityModulational instability, responsible of the soliton formation is analyzed. Analytical exact solutions are presented and used for investigating the dynamics of matter waves in BECs with external potential when either the gain or the loss of atoms is taken into consideration.
