A process can be envisioned as a set of activities executed in a predefined order. Process can be of varied forms such as industrial, education, financial, health care, etc. Monitoring of various activities in process is a crucial task in order to obtain an insight on its performance. If details such as the timing of each activity, its duration, and the resources used to perform each can be captured and recorded in the form of event logs, they can be utilized to automatically obtain a pictorial workflow of the real-time execution which helps to detect non-compliance, deviations and also suggest enhancements to make the process more competent. This can be accomplished by the usage of process mining (PM) technique. In this study, we provide an insight on the basic terminology, tools, techniques, life cycle followed, and the methods to adopt PM in general and their usage in the heathcare domain. The challenges in adopting PM techniques are also addressed.

摘要
