Vestibular implant (VI) is a device designed to restore peripheral vestibular function in patients with bilateral vestibulopathy. It comprises three key components: gyroscopes and/or accelerometers, an external processor, and an implanted stimulator. The VI compensates for bilateral vestibular loss, by electrically stimulating the vestibular system. Candidates for implantation typically experience disabling chronic symptoms such as unsteadiness and oscillopsia. Multiple research groups demonstrated the feasibility of the vestibular implant in humans. It was shown that a VI is able to partially restore the vestibulo-ocular reflex, otolith responses, and improve quality of life.
