Auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is a bio-electronic neuroprosthetic device that directly stimulates the second order neurons of the Cochlear Nucleus Complex (CNC) at the brainstem, bypassing the cochlea and auditory nerve. The ABIs were first implemented in patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) to reinstate hearing. Later, they were also used in children and adults with hearing loss due to pathologies other than NF2, such as cochlear or auditory nerve aplasia and cochlear ossification, in whoma cochlear implantation was not feasible. This chapter highlights evolution of the ABI, candidacy, fitting of the device and its benefits.
