The Vietnam War, which took place during the 1960s and 1970s, acted as a catalyst for unifying a divided nation, but it also caused tremendous human casualties and material damage. Among the consequences, environmental damage caused by defoliants continues to be reported even half a century after the war. It is documented that the United States sprayed a total of 72 million liters of defoliants over a period of ten years during the Vietnam War. While the U.S. military achieved significant success in jungle warfare through the use of these defoliants, they did not anticipate the massive environmental disaster that would follow.
