Since 1971, the Michigan Chemical Company had been manufacturing a substance called PBB (Polybrominated Biphenyls) and selling it under the product name “Firemaster.” The company also produced a feed additive that promotes milk production in cows, marketed as “Nutrimaster.” One summer day in 1973, due to the similarity of the product names, the person in charge mistakenly placed PBB into a bag of the feed additive and delivered it to a farm in central Michigan. PBB is a highly toxic substance that can cause cancer and neurological disorders in both animals and humans. This error ultimately resulted in a major environmental disaster.
