Cubebin and Its Derivatives in Neurodegenerative Diseases and Their Antimicrobial Potential

The bioactive dibenzylbutyrolactone lignan, cubebin, primarily has the potential cognitive benefits as an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Molecular docking reveals a robust binding affinity of cubebin to AChE, highlighting pivotal interactions crucial for AChE inhibition. It suggests the potential neuroprotective effect of cubebin in AD and any neurodegenerative diseases where acetylcholinesterase inhibition plays a predominant role. Cubebin and its derivatives show their antimicrobial activity. This chapter highlights a correlation between cubebin’s structure and antimicrobial efficacy and its lignan derivatives against pathogens, underscoring the importance of specific substituent groups.
