Percutaneous ventricular assist devices (pVADs) are non-implantable miniature blood pumps that can be used during cardiac recovery and high-risk coronary interventions. Despite the high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, the use of such devices in India has been limited due to their prohibitively high cost, largely a result of the absence of indigenous manufacturers. In response to this situation, a project has been initiated under the Gangwal School of Medical Science and Technology that aims to leverage the expertise and infrastructure available at IIT Kanpur to develop a high-end pVAD that will not only be available to a substantially greater section of the population and improve clinical outcomes but also contribute to the development of a medical device manufacturing ecosystem in the country.
