This introductory chapter emphasizes the importance of housing mix for urban inclusion. It points out the notion of housing mix and its policy anticipation. The ubiquitous anticipation of housing mix is to alleviate residential segregation and urban inequality through housing policy interventions. The theoretical proposition that supports the neighborhood change from poverty concentration to housing mix can be attributed to the theory of Neighborhood Effects. Drawing upon housing mixed communities as the platform, urban inclusion at the neighborhood level is stressed as it can exert contextual impacts on urban residents. Housing mix for urban inclusion in the Chinese context is especially targeted at in this book so as to follow the trajectory of housing mix policies and practices in urban China.
