An essential component of the meat industry is the by-products, sometimes called as the fifth quarter. By-products if not used appropriately, it could result in potential loss to the industry. Since meat by-products are not used appropriately, the cost of waste disposal increases. By-product utilization and waste management are essential because they present significant risks to environmental protection and long-term sustainability of meat industry. It is possible to make valuable products out of many of these items. If the byproducts of the buffalo meat industry are properly recovered and utilized, not only would this create a wealth from waste, but the quality and availability of hides and skins would be much enhanced. The potential for further processing and making use of significant by-products from the buffalo meat business are presented in this chapter. This entails the processing and use of various by-products such as blood, bones, hides and skin, gut and intestinal, glandular, and others.
