Zoonoses Associated with Buffaloes and their Control Measures
摘要
Buffaloes are considered as an important source of milk in many of the Asian countries. Their adaptability to tropical environment and disease resistance makes buffalo significant to many rural communities. The continuous increase in demand of milk and milk products is leading to the rise in the commercial intensive farming system across the animal husbandry systems. Nonetheless, many of the unsustainable animal husbandry practices, globalized trades, and other anthropogenic factors are responsible for many of the emerging and re-emerging zoonoses in animal production system, including buffalo farming. In most of the developing nations, inadequate farm biosecurity measures, poor monitoring and surveillance system, less focus on preventive approaches, and inadequate public health infrastructures are contributing to spill-over of these zoonoses, especially to the farming communities. In many parts of the world, buffalo meat (carabeef) is in huge demand; however unhygienic animal production and processing operations could lead to foodborne illnesses such as Salmonellosis, Campylobacteriosis, Listeriosis and Escherichia coli, and Clostridium perfringens. Apart from public health impact, many of the zoonoses can cause adversely affect the health and reproductive performance of the livestock, resulting in huge economic loss. In order to control these buffaloes associated zoonoses, strict implementation of the good animal husbandry practices at farm level with the formulation of standards operating protocols, risk analysis approach at food chain level including traceability and transparency of the existing food safety and management system, and evidence-based control measures in concordance with a One Health approach is the need of the hour.
