Culture in Europe underwent a sea change as Christianity was challenged from within and without in the course of the sixteenth century. The innovative works of revisionist historians such as Keith Thomas, Peter Burke, Carlo Ginzburg, Elizabeth Eisenstein demolished older narratives. These historians clearly recognized that popular beliefs were not only worthy of consideration, but they also formed a fundamental part of the mainstream narrative of early modern European history.
