We must consider if there really was such a thing as ‘the Reformation’ in the Latin Church, an expression no one used in the sense of a radical reform movement until long after the events it was meant to describe. The demand for ‘reform’ within Christianity was not new, so why is the Reformation singled out as a category or indeed an ‘age’? We think of the Reformation as a Protestant movement, but the movement actually comprised a set of reforms forged in the crucible of war by both Protestants and Catholics.
