Implementation of Poultry Waste as a Calcium Source for Microbial-Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) Treatment of Ganga River Sand

Bio-cementation through the MICP technique is an eco-friendly, sustainable method for soil improvement. In this process, a calcium source is provided to urease enzyme-producing bacteria to enable bio-mineralization. Typically, calcium chloride is used, but it’s costly in large quantities. This study explores a cheaper alternative by using eggshells instead of industrially produced calcium chloride. Calcium ions were extracted from eggshells using acetic acid, a common organic acid found in vinegar. The urease-producing bacteria Bacillus sphaericus was used to compare the calcite precipitation of calcium from eggshells and industrial calcium chloride at the same concentration. Microanalysis using Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the precipitation of calcium carbonate. The results showed that both calcium sources produced similar calcite precipitation, around 3.4%, after 7 days of treatment. Additionally, permeability reduction in treated Ganga River sand was comparable for both calcium sources. Strength tests were conducted using an unconfined compression test after 21 days of treatment. This study highlights the use of household and animal waste in environmental geotechnics as a natural method for soil and ground improvement. It also offers a solution for waste management while promoting sustainable ground improvement.
