Diagnosis and Treatment of Epilepsy Comorbidities

Epilepsy is closely related to sleep, and the two can affect each other [1]. Most seizures and sudden unexpected deaths in patients with epilepsy occur during sleep [2, 3]. In turn, seizures directly disrupt sleep and induce fragmented sleep at night, daytime somnolence, fatigue, cognitive impairment, and abnormal behavior [4–6]. Sleep deprivation can induce seizures, and both can occur at the same time, becoming the most common epilepsy comorbidity. Of comorbidities, sleep apnea has the most direct impact on epilepsy. As one of the most common sleep disorders in patients with epilepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can increase the frequency of seizures and alleviate seizures after treatment [7, 8]. Therefore, understanding the influence of OSA on epilepsy is particularly important for the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy.
