Alang Ship Graveyard in India: A Review of Ship Scraps and Other Hazardous Waste
摘要
India’s ship-breaking and recycling industry has undergone significant changes over time, from an industry focused on ship recycling to an increasingly sustainable industry. This study examines the development of ship recycling in India, from its origins in Alang, Gujarat, to current efforts to implement environmentally friendly methods in ship-breaking. Until a few years ago, places in India were notorious for environmental damage. However, in response to requests from international governments and improved Indian laws, the industry continues to work toward safety and sustainability in shipwreck areas. To make India Pillar for Safe and Sustainable Recycling of Ships, The Ship Recycling Code 2019 was introduced by the Ministry of Shipping in collaboration with international organizations such as the Hong Kong International Forum for Safe and Green Recycling. Despite these achievements, many challenges remain unsolved, including the need to strengthen laws and regulations. This review provides an overview of the history of ship recycling, its activities, pollution, economic and social impacts and challenges, and the future of sustainable ship recycling in India.
