The initial studies of metaphor in the West were born in the parent body of the classical rhetoric, and have a history of more than two thousand years since the time of Plato. During this time, the focus has shifted several times as the research has progressed and has gone through a number of distinctive stages of development, which can be roughly grouped into three stages.
