The performance of a landfill usually depends on the critical components like liner and final cover. The final cover plays a crucial role in the performance during post-construction stage and conventionally consists of compressed soil or compacted clay covers usually of 6 inches thick. The paucity in sourcing the clay has necessitated the use of alternate materials that can be used as final covers from sustainable perspective. This article discusses the performance of the select alternative substitute materials to compacted clay and include charcoal sludge compost (CSC), HDPE geomembrane, ET cover (Evapotranspiration), PVC geomembrane (Polyvinyl Chloride), Biogeochemical cover (BGCC), and Phytocapping (Pc). The functional aspects pertaining to durability, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness associated with the use of these alternate substitute final cover materials are critically discussed. These critical observations will assist the practicing engineer to ascertain and select the right alternate cover material based on the availability of proper resources nearby, an ideal climate, and the intended end use following post closure relying on associated costs and environmental sustainability.
