Exploring the Health Consequences of Air Pollution: A Comprehensive Systematic Review

The ambient air pollution (AAP) adversely affects the health of humans, causing and triggering a number of diseases with high morbidity and mortality in India. Increasing urbanization in India, as well as the expansion of industry, power, and transportation, has contributed to a rapid rise in the AAP level. Due to its location downwind from Delhi, the current study area is subjected to a greater amount of pollution than that of the city. Several studies were conducted primarily in Delhi or within the Indian context. The current study area has, however, been the subject of only a few studies. Data from the repository were also available for state-level studies, so local health studies could not be conducted with these data. For our review analysis, 41 studies were found to be useful. Based on any of the studies or a combination of them, it is not possible to gather a comprehensive overview of the incidence of diseases such as COPD, bronchial asthma, and other allergies in Delhi related to pollution. In addition, tobacco use, smoke, and indoor air pollution are also factors that contribute to the development of these diseases, so it was impossible to determine which portion is caused by environmental pollution. Also using Global Burden of Disease (GBD) (2019) data, we compared Delhi with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana in terms of DALYs and deaths caused by particulate matter. Upon analysis of the data, we found that Uttar Pradesh was more affected than Delhi in terms of both DALYs and deaths caused by particulate matter. COPD contributed significantly to DALYs and deaths due to COPD. From the analysis it was found that to track possible sources of air pollution exposure contributing to hospitalizations, hospitals and healthcare facilities should standardize data collection procedures. It is also imperative to make available hospital records on air pollution-related diseases for the foreseeable future. All morbidities and mortalities for Indian populations should be estimated using data from these cohorts, as well as risk ratios. For the purpose of capturing pollution and weather heterogeneity in a variety of urban and rural settings, cohorts need to be established in different locations.
