Fruits and vegetables due to their composition of living tissue are the most perishable agricultural commodities around the world. Lack of proper handling of these commodities faced serious post-harvest losses which not only resulted into huge economic losses to the farmers but also wastages of natural resources used and time spent to grow them. Managing postharvest diseases is a serious challenge and require a collaborative approach involving scientists, administrators, and policy makers. Understanding of precise magnitude of the economic impact of postharvest losses, various kinds of factors influencing the postharvest losses are essentially required to develop strategy to overcome them. Future research should focus on several key areas to improve disease managements like advanced diagnostics using cutting-edge biotechnological tools, evolving reliable methods for forecasting disease outbreaks, research on the potential use of non-pathogenic or attenuated pathogen strains for controlling diseases, and identifications of various compounds that helps to enhance their resistance to pathogens. Improving and integration of physical, chemical, biological, cultural methods and development and use of improved varieties of fruits and vegetables having in-built resistance to postharvest diseases, better packaging, transport and storage facilities are essentially needed to prevent the postharvest damages.
