Aboriginals are the original inhabitants of Australia. But life was not easy for them and they had to face a lot of traumatic experiences from the white Australians. Kate Grenville’s most famous novel The Secret River (2005) was published in more than twenty countries, and the novel won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 2006, and it was shortlisted for both the Miles Franklin Literary Award and the Man Booker Prize in 2006. The novel is based on her convict ancestor, Solomon Wiseman, her great-great grandfather. The paper attempts to elucidate the myriad manifestations of trauma and how it has a strong foothold in the present life of Mr. William Thornhill and the people around him. He becomes a slave to his traumatic past; the sin he committed in his past haunts him and makes his present unbearable for him. The paper closely analyses the pitiable conditions of the Aboriginals and the traumatic events that ensue within the broader frameworks of gender and trauma.
