Slow-Growth Strategies for Prolonged Storage for Conservation of Rare and Endangered Germplasm
摘要
This chapter examines the implementation of slow-growth storage strategies as an essential approach to safeguard and maintain the genetic resources of rare and threatened plant species. In light of escalating ecological and anthropogenic pressures, preserving genetic diversity has become pivotal for sustaining ecosystem resilience and maintaining the continuity of vital biological resources. Slow-growth techniques reduce cellular metabolic activity, thereby maintaining the functional integrity of plant tissues under controlled conditions and extending the duration of in vitro conservation. This chapter systematically addresses the core principles of slow-growth methods, emphasizing the fine-tuning of nutrient media, temperature, light, and environmental parameters. Furthermore, it details the application of these strategies across a diverse array of plant taxa, discussing specific adaptations, success metrics, and the inherent challenges encountered in the process. Through a synthesis of theoretical insights and practical implementations, this chapter aims to contribute to a robust framework for the medium-term conservation of plant genetic variation, underscoring its significance for future research and sustainable resource management.
