Urban Redevelopment and Neighborhood Gentrification
摘要
This chapter provides an overview and introduction to our volume on urban redevelopment and neighborhood gentrification in three comparative contexts. We focus on gentrifying neighborhoods in the three key global cities and examine the processes and challenges that impact the various constituencies that live and work in those neighborhoods. While our focus is upon urban redevelopment and neighborhood gentrification processes post the Great Recession in 2009, we use historical background data to provide context for contemporary challenges. In so doing, we delve into the complexities wrought by our global economy through globalization and the rapid pace of urbanization, as both impact redevelopment and gentrification in global cities, in particular. This chapter provides the organizing framework for the volume, as well as an overview of the various waves of neighborhood gentrification impacting global societies. We pose key research questions that seek to address the question of cui bono—who benefits - or qui amisit, who loses from urban redevelopment and neighborhood gentrification in different global settings.
