Challenges of Emerging Pollutants for the Ecological Receptors in the Twenty-First Century

Emerging pollutants (EPs) are present in both mobile and persistent forms across various environmental matrices, affecting ecological receptors such as, soil, water, sediments, and air, even at low concentrations originating from various human activities. Micro contaminants enter the environment from various human-made sources, including pesticides, cosmetics, personal and household care items, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, surfactants, plastic products, and nanomaterials. These substances are widely distributed globally and are essential for contemporary society. The precise aims of this review include forecasting the assessment of risks associated with pollutants in the terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric environments while considering the impacts of severe weather events driven by climate change. Recent progress has been made in investigating emerging pollutants, their sources, behavior, and movement through the environment, as well as the effects of climate change, biodiversity, and human responses on the biosphere. Certain micropollutants, although not regularly monitored, hold the potential to infiltrate aquatic ecosystems and can negatively impact both ecological systems and human health. The ecotoxicological implications of specific emerging micropollutants are still largely unclear, as there is often inadequate data to assess their associated risks. The article explores the ecological risks associated with the presence and movement of emerging pollutants within ecosystems. Therefore, to address the ecological risks associated with EPs, more research is needed to identify science-based solutions that can mitigate chemical hazards to both living beings and humans.
