Based on empirical research, a successful soccer athlete is a complex form of various interacting skills and qualities, which presents what characteristics support the process of talent identification and development in elite youth soccer from a fully integrated interdisciplinary perspective. On this stage, scouts usually play an important role in the early phases of the club’s talent identification process. However, little is known about the way they identify talent. Therefore, this research focuses on the process of identifying talent among soccer talent scouts, in order to provide an overview of how scouts identify talent. This research is using observation methods, where data are collected through online questionnaires filled by 100 men aged 30–50 years old with 10 years of experience in soccer as respondents. This study found that the average age at which talent scouts feel they can predict improved performance depends on the age group in which they select talent, and the mean age for predicting performance is in the age interval 14 years old and younger. The five most frequently mentioned attributes cover the main performance categories: technical skills or technique with the ball, tactical-perceptual skills, physical skills as well as personality and mentality. Talent scouts generally show that they predict performance by assessing attributes in a structured manner. Most scouts are indicated to (a) always, or very often, evaluate different players – of the same age and playing position – on the same attributes, (b) knowing which attributes they would score before observing a player, and (c) evaluate different attributes separately.
