Fact verification evaluates the truthfulness of claims against evidence, serving as a crucial tool in combating misinformation and enhancing information reliability. The growing importance of this field has sparked extensive research, leading to the development of numerous approaches. This paper presents a systematic review of fact verification research, examining verification techniques across evidence retrieval and veracity prediction, along with their supporting datasets. We analyze the current landscape of fact verification systems, and provide future directions in this field. Our analysis provides a comprehensive framework for understanding state-of-the-art approaches and identifies promising directions for future research.
