The spread of the disease Covid-19 across the globe, since its first outbreak in Wuhan, China, led to the World Health Organization classifying it as a pandemic on March 11, 2020, within 3 months since the first reports of the illness. This global pandemic caught the world unaware and the global scientific and medical community were at the frontline of mitigating the damage from this disease, by understanding more about the pathogen, tracking its evolution and developing and implementing treatments and diagnostics. This was a global call for action that the scientific community responded to. There were severalconcerted and individual global efforts to develop drugs, vaccines and diagnostics to address the challenges posed by the disease and governments and organisations across the globe collectively committed themselves to this task. In India, the scientific community also came together to collaborate, in national as well as international efforts, to develop solutions to the pandemic. The S&T strategy in India against Covid-19 relied on 4 pillars – Understanding the pathogen and the disease, identifying the affected patients through efficient and accurate diagnostics, developing cures through therapeutic agents and developing vaccines for the prevention of the disease.
