Biological E Limited is an integrated vaccine development and manufacturing organization with nine WHO-prequalified vaccines. BioE manufactures all classes of vaccines and supplies more than two million doses of vaccines every day to more than 135 countries for deployment in childhood immunization programs. Beginning of January’20; China had announced a novel coronavirus was causing infections leading to serious respiratory disease and it was spreading rapidly in the population and soon patients in many parts of the world started reporting similar infections. This novel coronavirus was similar to the virus; SARS-CoV-1, that had caused outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2002–2004 timeframe. With rapidly mounting cases reported from all corners of the globe, on 31st January’2020, WHO named the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus as COVID19 (Corona Virus Disease 2019) and declared Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). As SARS-CoV-2 was a novel virus, global population did not possess any immunity and the virus was observed to be capable of spreading rapidly through air via aerosol route. Global scientific and medical professionals quickly realized that an effective vaccine would be the only way to protect population and get the pandemic under control. Biological E Limited is a fully integrated vaccine research, development and manufacturing organization with significant experience in developing wide variety of vaccines and we decided to wholeheartedly participate in efforts to provide safe and effective vaccine against SARS-CoV-2. Lack of large manufacturing facilities that could handle BSL3 microorganisms within BioE manufacture infrastructure meant we could not manufacture vaccine based on inactivated virus as the antigen which is commonly used vaccine platform against other respiratory viruses such as Influenza viruses. Initial evaluation showed significant structural similarities between SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2, especially in terms of presence of Spike Protein on the virus surface and reported success with use of the Spike protein as target antigen. Hence, we decided to pursue COVID19 vaccine based on adjuvanted protein sub-unit platform and Spike protein as the target antigen.
