Cultural Directions for the Adriatic Sea, or the Gulf of Venice
摘要
From the extant copies, probably a little before 1300, the outline the portolan charts gave for the Mediterranean was amazingly accurate. In addition, their wealth of place-names and images constitutes a major historical source. Sailing directions for the Adriatic are guidelines for evaluating and documenting cultural values across time. Following rhumb lines joining points, the chapter looks closely at the foundational defence of the Serenissima.
