Plant-Derived Excipients: Applications in Drug Formulation

The use of plant-based excipients in pharmaceutical formulation is becoming more popular due to a number of benefits they have over their synthetic equivalents. Because they offer improved safety, sustainability and performance, natural excipients primarily biopolymers are becoming more and more well-liked in the sector. Plant-based excipients can reduce the negative effects on the environment and health hazards associated with their synthetic equivalents because they are often harmless and biodegradable. Since many of these natural excipients are readily available in nature and have very cheap costs, they are sufficiently accessible to have useful uses in the pharmaceutical industry. The excipients mentioned above are used in a wide range of dosage forms, such as tablets, gels and nanoparticles; they enhance the distribution and bioavailability of medications while also enhancing their therapeutic efficiency. Gums and mucilage derived from plants can be employed in a variety of ways as stabilisers, disintegrants and binders, which increase the compatibility of pharmaceutical goods. Plant polysaccharides, for example, can alter the kinetics of medication release, improving the effectiveness of treatment. The development of novel dosage forms, with excipients added to perform specific functions and, in some cases, enhance drug bioavailability, is a key aspect of advanced drug delivery science. This tendency for naturally derived products is leading to a trend towards the substitution of natural additives, such as plant-derived polymers, gums and waxes, for synthetic ones. Even though natural excipients have a lot of potential, a number of obstacles, such as standardisation and regulatory concerns, highlight the necessity of more study and cooperation to fully realise their potential for use in pharmaceutical applications.
