This paper introduces the concept of proportional acceptability (or defense) as a means to distinguish different levels at which an argument can be accepted or rejected. The key idea of this paper is to evaluate the degree of justification of arguments by taking into account the proportion of attacks that are not counter-attacked. More Specifically, an argument is considered successfully defended by a set of arguments if there is not a significant enough proportion of its attackers such that there is not a significant enough proportion of the counter-attackers in the set. Building on this idea, we develop proportional semantics, which are generalizations Dung’s semantics and variants of graded semantics. Furthermore, proportional semantics offer a new perspective on argument rankings, contributing to the topic of ranking-based semantics.
