Introduction to Bioinformatics
摘要
The three greatest projects of the twentieth century are the Manhattan project (1942–1945), the Apollo project (1961–1972), and human genome project (1990–2003). Each one had its own merits. The human genome project was an international scientific research project, which aimed to determine the human DNA sequence and gene functions. It was formally launched in 1990 and completed in April 2003. After human genome was completed, many other organisms such as arabidopsis, mouse, and zebra fish have been sequenced and analyzed. In July 2025, the US National Center for Biotechnology Information contained complete genomic sequences of 53,232 eukaryotes (animals, fungi, and plants), 2,692,439 prokaryotes (bacteria), 230,411 viruses, as well as many sequences of organellar genomes (chloroplast and mitochondiron), plasmids, and individual genes.
