In this chapter, we illustrate how people with chronic illness perceive the digital space in ameliorating loneliness, the multiple ways in which they engage with these spaces, and its benefits including support, validation, negotiation of illness experience and identities, and sense of belonging. We also provide evidence of the drawbacks and risks of using the digital space to address loneliness and how, in some ways, the digital space can compound the loneliness experience. We conclude by discussing implications of the recent boom in technological solutions for social connection and loneliness, and the importance of embedding lived experience of chronic illness into the design of such interventions.
