“The Life I Should Have Lived”: The Significance of Time in Experiencing Chronic Illness and Loneliness
摘要
Chapter Three explores chronicity and loneliness through a temporal lens, illustrating how assumptions of linear and sequential life progression stand in tension with the messiness of the lived experience of chronic conditions. We show how experiences of illness shift participants’ sense of belonging in the world, and their imagined futures. Loneliness emerges through feeling left behind in the present, while past losses and future uncertanties intensify the experience of temporal displacement.
