Changing Global Order and Climate: A Comparative Analysis of Cartesian and Organismic Perspectives

Humanity is currently confronted with a changing climate and major shifts in the global order. Although significant negative impacts are to be expected, the future is fraught with uncertainty. This chapter, examines these developments from a higher perspective, at the paradigm level: by comparing between Cartesian Mechanism (CM) and Organismic Systems (OS). It begins with an introduction of the main tenets of CM and its role in shaping current realities, and the relationship between worldview and paradigms. It then presents key works that are pivotal in the OS development. They include Capra’s Web of Life, Vernadsky’s Biosphere, Lovelock and Margulis’ Gaia, Maturana and Varela’s Autopoiesis, and Soleri’s Arcology. The chapter discusses the changing global order and climate change by comparing the perspectives from the two paradigms, and how they contributed to the changes, organic responses and outcomes. It highlights that policies, plans and actions, based on CM, do not necessarily yield expected results, because people and environment are part of a planetary complex system, which responds to perturbations through a self-organisation process to attain new equilibrium. They are more accurately depicted by OS. The chapter concludes that: (i) a multipolar world is an inevitable outcome, which will be more sustainable because it aligns with the planetary and OS; (ii) a hot war is probable because of the CM worldview adopted by the West; (iii) there will be deleterious fallout due to CM actions but recovery due to OS response; (iv) climate policies based on CM will be ineffective, and that OS response would be more sustainable and climate-resilient; and (v) the knowledge society that has emerged is more aware of sustainability but increasingly ecologically illiterate. The chapter shows that comparative analysis by considering both CM and OS improves understanding of current developments, issues and concerns.
