Class III SLRP members are opticin, osteoglycin (also known as mimecan), and epiphycan, and they play a key role in regulating collagen fibrillogenesis. Recent evidence also suggests these protein can compensate for one another in the knockout mice model under various pathological conditions, suggesting functional redundancy. Notably Class III SLRP members possess the fewest leucine-rich repeats among the SLRP family and are frequently found as proteolytically cleaved fragmented forms. This chapter explores the individual roles of each Class III SLRP member in detail.
