The chapter examines why credible public systems are needed in health and in doing so, it suggests a framework to do so. After making a case for why public systems matter in the Indian context, this paper will present the comparative position of the Indian health system and how it has evolved over the years. Thereafter, it will undertake the identification of the key gaps that needs to be addressed in India’s health system. In doing so, it will try and learn from the Covid period to identify the gaps clearly. It will conclude with suggestions for crafting a credible public system for human development, including health.
