The marked absence of a detailed investigation into migratory patterns and trends in India post the 2011 Census continues to be a significant gap in labour market data, especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic which exposed the extent of vulnerability of migrant workers. This chapter uses information collected on Migration from the National Sample Survey Organisation’s (NSSO) 78th Round- Multiple Indicator Survey (MIS) 2020–21 to understand not just the current incidence of migration for work-related reasons, but also tries to highlight the future perspectives of migrant households and traces the outcomes in terms of change in income due to migration. A key observation stems from the fact that migration for work remains despite income vulnerability post migration, showcasing the precarity of India’s labour force.

摘要
