Major Challenges for Implementation of Microbes in the Wastewater Treatment Plants, Commercialization, and Future Prospects

Implementing microbial systems in wastewater treatment plants is a revolutionary approach to managing industrial effluents’ sustainably and effectively. This biotechnological method exploits microorganisms’ inherent ability to degrade and remove contaminants, providing an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to conventional chemical treatments. Industries increasingly recognize the importance of efficient wastewater management to mitigate pollution, enhance business sustainability, and protect public health. Despite its promise, scaling up microbial wastewater treatments from laboratory studies to industrial applications faces significant challenges, including maintaining microbial efficiency under variable conditions, integrating with existing infrastructure, and overcoming regulatory and economic hurdles. Advancements in genetic engineering, bioprocess optimization, and environmental monitoring hold potential to address these barriers. This chapter critically examines industrial wastewater management, exploring key enablers, challenges, and innovations, while emphasizing the pivotal role of microbial technologies. It advocates for collaborative efforts to realize their full potential, ensuring sustainable water resource management and fostering environmental resilience.
