Precompression is a widely adopted ground improvement technique for improving the clays prior to any construction above them. As the precompression process is time-consuming, the technique is applied in conjunction with vertical sand drains or prefabricated vertical drains to accelerate the consolidation. Any mechanism that causes soils to compress can be used as a precompression method. Previous research studies have shown that the introduction of salt solutions into clays can alter the permeability, which in turn can alter the consolidation characteristics. This is brought about by changing the diffused double-layer thickness of clays and the soil structure flocculation. As a preliminary step toward investigating the suitability of saline solutions as a precompression technique, one-dimensional consolidation tests were carried out in the present study on two locally available clays of low and high compressibility with distilled water and salt solutions (1 M NaCl and 1 M CaCl2) as inundating fluids. The improvement in the rate and amount of consolidation brought about by the saline intrusion was investigated by measuring the coefficient of consolidation and compression index, respectively.
