Soft kaolin soils present significant challenges for infrastructure development due to their low bearing capacity and high susceptibility to settlement. In recent years, the use of Prefabricated Jute Drains wrapped with Polyamide Polyester Geosynthetics (JPPG) has emerged as a promising solution for ground improvement of soils among various PVDs viz. sand drain, saw dust, sawdust wrapped with Geosynthetics. Experimental Rowe Oedometer and Prototype Model study has drawn the optimistic solution for the economic use of PVD in the field, as it seems to be promising setup to accelerate the consolidation due to radial drainage among other methods of ground improvement technique as the Rowe Oedometer allows simultaneous measurement of pore water pressure and consolidation of soft soil. From the series of experiments conducted with various shapes of PVD and combination of various materials, it is concluded that vertical drains can lead to reduction in construction cost along with maintenance cost. For a project, the basic materials and installation cost are critical. For sand drains and sawdust wicks, labor cost of prefabricating the drain on the site may be relatively high. This may represent unit cost of drain 50–60% over that of band drain fabricated of jute core jacked with polyamide polyester (PP)—PVD. JPPG drain may be cost-effective to be adopted.
