Can we use semi-structured interview data to understand motives? What motivates people’s moral judgments? These questions have been explored by a number of scholars across different fields—particularly from the Sociology of Culture, Cognitive Science, and Qualitative Methods. This book is the culmination of years of reflection and analysis on the topic. In writing this book, we offer our answers to these questions, providing new theoretical, empirical, and methodological insights. Such responses challenge long-standing narratives about the use of semi-structured interview data and, in some ways, support the recent developments in sociology and cognitive science about using such data to study motives. In doing so, we hope to inspire more scholars to use our theoretical and methodological tools as points of departure for their own research and answers to the above questions.
