The analysis of acid–base disorders is a complex exercise. An approach to acid–base disorders based on blood-gas testing should be undertaken within the context of the clinical situation. This chapter attempts to reduce the complicated process of seeking out and evaluating the various acid–base disturbances into an integrated systematic approach that is easy to understand and simple to implement. The approach also encompasses the pathophysiology of these disorders, thus providing a clear rationale for the workup.
