The soil is a natural material having different colors. Soil color is one of its inherent properties to describe it. The color of a soil mainly depends on wetness, redox reactions, soil minerals, accumulations, organic matter, etc. The constituents of the soil are depicted by its color; hence, it is very important to know the right shade of the soil. The objective of the study is to develop an idea of the soil colors with the various types of soils. In the present research work, soil identification and classification were done at different locations in Jabalpur city. The exploration of the soils has been done as per IS 1498:1970 (IS: 1498–1970 Classification and identification of soils for general engineering purposes [1]), Classification and Identification of Soils for General Engineering Purposes. The laboratory tests are performed for the soil classification as per IS 2720: (Part 4) 1985 (IS: 2720: (Part-4) 1985 Methods of test for soils, grain size analysis [3]), and IS 2720: (Part 5) 1985 (IS: 2720: (Part-5) 1985 Liquid limit and plastic limit, Second Revision [4]). The authors developed a conventional method named “Plate Method” to get a very appropriate idea of the color of a soil. The soil color’s assessed and named as per “Munsell Soil Color Charts”. As a result, a general idea of the colors of soils with the IS classification of various soils is established.
