Determination of Bearing Capacity for a Typical Soil of Tripura by Laboratory Plate Load Test

The construction of foundations on weak soil poses a significant challenge for civil engineers due to the risk of shear failure and excessive settlement. To prevent the risk of shear failure and excessive settlement the bearing capacity of soil analysis is required. This study focuses on the bearing capacity analysis of foundation soil. To study the bearing capacity of the soils of Tripura, representative soil samples have been collected from the bank of the Dakdu River, near Chakbasta Kali Mandir, beside NIT Agartala Road, Tripura (India). Laboratory plate load tests have been conducted to analyze the bearing capacity of footings, employing plates of varying shapes, sizes, and thickness for dry cohesionless soil. The laboratory setup for plate load testing offers advantages over field tests in terms of size and manpower requirements. The ultimate bearing capacity of the square plates of sizes 25, 21, and 16 cm and circular plate of diameter 23 cm found out to be 22.50 kN/m2, 20.00 kN/m2, 37.50 kN/m2, and 25.00 kN/m2, respectively, from load–settlement curves. These values are matching nearly with the results obtained from the ultimate bearing capacity equation given by (Terzaghi in Theoretical Soil Mechanics, Wiley, New York 1943). Hence, it can be concluded that results obtained from the laboratory plate load test are in good agreement with the results obtained by theoretical approach.
