Guwahati City in the northeast Indian state of Assam is a rapidly urbanizing metropolis with a booming population which is fast settling on the hill slopes. Guwahati City consists of eighteen such hills and is located in seismic zone V, thus generating the likelihood of earthquake-induced landslides. In this study earthquake-induced landslide hazard levels for Guwahati City hill slopes in terms of Factors of Safety (FOS) is evaluated. A topographical slope map of Guwahati City is developed in ArcGIS by incorporating the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) sourced from USGS Earth Explorer. The slope map is divided into grids of 10 × 10 m and the slope angles are found to be in the range of 10°–60°. Four sets of Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) contour maps for different earthquakes are obtained. These PGA values are considered the driving force for landslide occurrence. PGA values and slope angles for each grid are employed into Newmark’s methodology to obtain the FOS. It was observed that hills with slope angles ranging from 10° to 25° lie within high hazard levels of landslide occurrence. However, as the slope angle increases beyond 25° the possibility of earthquake-induced landslide decreases. This is also observed that the hazard level remains high with higher PGA values and lower slope angles. However, the hazard level remains low at higher PGA levels and higher slope angles. These results are used to identify areas within Guwahati city vulnerable to earthquake-induced landslides.
