Simulation of the Triggering of Contaminant in the Soil in a Geotechnical Centrifuge

The objective of this paper is to develop an innovative trigger mechanism for the release of contaminant at 60 g in a 1.1 m radius balanced beam centrifuge. In this study, silty sand compacted to its maximum dry density (MDD) at optimum moisture content (OMC) was used. A custom-designed calibrated dispenser unit was used to trigger the flow of the contaminant through the soil model at 60 g. The dispenser unit consists of two compartments separated by a polythene sheet with a sharp needle installed below the polythene sheet in the lower compartment. After the model was accelerated to the required gravity level, due to the increase in liquid pressure the polythene sheet sagged and was punched by the needle that caused the leakage of contaminant to the soil layer. The developed triggering setup helps in studying contaminant movement within the soil with time and also in assessing the efficacy of containment measures.
