Analysing Tunnel-Induced Ground Settlement in Urban Environments with Constitutive Model

The rise of urban populations has spurred the construction of underground structures to meet the increasing demand for public infrastructure, particularly in megacities worldwide. Tunnels, in particular, have gained prominence as vital components of transportation systems and utility projects. However, incidents such as the one in Kolkata in 2019 serve as reminders of the potential risks involved. During tunnelling work for a metro project in Kolkata, several houses collapsed, and many more suffered severe damage due to ground movements. These movements were attributed to the tunnelling activities in soft soil zones. This unfortunate event underscores the critical importance of thoroughly analysing tunnel-induced ground settlement both before and after construction begins. To delve deeper into the 2019 Kolkata tunnelling incident, a comprehensive investigation employing advanced constitutive modelling techniques was conducted. Notably, incorporating the rotation of Tunnel Borings Machine (TBM) wheels into the analysis significantly bolstered the reliability of the approach.
