Numerical Analysis to Study the Effect of Load Reversal on the Pile Load Deformation Behaviour

A key consideration in the design of a pile foundation is the load deformation behaviour of pile. The majority of studies address this topic where the piles are under compression, and few are focused on uplift capacity of piles. In certain condition, pile experiences both compressive as well as uplift loading which lead to the load reversal on pile head. This paper studies the effects of static compressive load on the uplift capacity of piles embedded in sandy soil. Numerical analysis is carried out in PLAXIS 3D Software on a single 3D model pile by varying the embedment length/diameter ratios from 10 to 25. Five cycles of loading, unloading, uplift and reloading were performed. It has been observed that after unloading and before applying uplift load, some stresses are present at the pile-soil interface which are termed as residual stresses. This residual stress factor is often neglected as major emphasis always lies on compressive loading and not on tension. From the numerical analysis it has been found that load reversal affects the final pile head deformation.
